A hidden gem: Little Tokyo Blok M

Japanese emigrants coming from Japan of course has it’s own descendants that reside in foreign country especially in South East Asia. Looking to this fun fact, the japanese had also been active across the region to actually promote their culture to everyone and indeed everyone enjoyed it too as well. Not only in Indonesia but you can also find Little Tokyo in other parts of the world such as Adelaide, Darwin, Sydney and even Gold Coast.


There are about 7,000 Japanese used to live in Jakarta, Indonesia and mainly concentrated in Blok M area and somewhere near there too. Thus, the history of Little Tokyo Blok M Restaurants are mainly built due to the Japanese emigrants that reside here in Jakarta.


This May, Little Tokyo held a festival called Ennichisai Blok M is an annual Japanese Art and Culture festival held at Blok M, South Jakarta since 2010.


This annual event could attract visitors up to 200,000. No wonder it is interesting because for all japanese or even japan enthusiasts could be enlighten during this event. It’s fair to say that the festival could teach many things to people as it is also strengthening the relationship of Japan and Indonesia and also a social benefits to the communities that are involved. People are also tired of going to malls, thus it’s another good-to-go event.


It showcases performances from Japan such as omikoshi, taiko, and even several japanese dances and cosplay!

There are also pop culture events and performances. Head over to Blok M next year and make sure you wear your costume!
