Art has been a fundamental tool in conveying messages even to the most critical contexts. In the Betawi tribe, this form of communication is visible in their traditional art of Tari Topeng Betawi. Generally, it is a part of the Betawi’s traditional dance that uses masks as part of playing a role. There are of course a range of masks and costumes that varies for each type of plays and roles within it. Like one of the main functions of art, Tari Topeng Betawi is usually used as a medium of social criticism or as means of conveying moral messages to the society in a rather implicit and humorous manner.

In the beginning, this traditional dance is played on the streets but would later be played on a real stage with a better quality of set properties. The unique point of this dance is that, wherever it is that they play, there is a significant connection with the Betawi cultural vibes, which are conveyed in the set. Moreover, the background music played has also captured the feel of the Betawi culture as a whole.

These attributes are essential to be displayed in order to create a valuable art form. It’s these types of movements that distinct a legendary art amongst others since personal meanings are attached within the art in order to have an emotional engagement with the audience.
